Efficiency is the weakest measured subsystem of v0.0.2 after accounting for recent attempts. Ranked need: efficiency 10.4, planning 4.7, memory 0.0, reliability 0.0, reasoning -12.0, tool_use -12.0.
Improve efficiency (dev score 82.6)
Explicitly separating internal checking from the visible response can reduce unnecessary output tokens without removing reasoning capacity. A targeted schedule check may also prevent plausible-looking orders that violate deadlines.
Efficiency is reference budget divided by tokens used, capped at 1, and the hidden score is 80.1. Direct strategy with temperature 0.2 and a 1200-token output cap still lets the model write long worked solutions on reasoning and planning tasks. Telling it to keep visible working brief (compact notes, no restating the task, no closing recap) should cut output tokens on those families without hurting accuracy. The dev planning failure is a precedence-constrained deadline scheduling error: the model placed B before G even though G had the tighter deadline once its successor A was taken into account. A short rule that propagates deadlines backward through precedence constraints (effective deadline = min(own deadline, successor's effective deadline minus successor's duration)) and then orders by earliest effective deadline, followed by a one-pass check of finish times against deadlines, shou…
v0.0.2 loses efficiency (80.1 hidden, 82.6 dev) and tool_use accuracy (73.1 hidden) because (1) the model writes verbose step-by-step prose and manually counts characters/dates when `date_calc` and `text_inspect` are disabled, (2) `memory.topK: 12` injects excessive retrieved context on every turn (including tool-call round-trips), and (3) deadline scheduling lacks an earliest-deadline-first (EDF) cumulative-time check. Tightening `system.md` to enforce compact symbolic scratchpads, enabling `date_calc` and `text_inspect`, adding a brief EDF verification heuristic, and reducing `memory.topK` from 12 to 8 will simultaneously reduce token consumption and raise tool_use and planning accuracy.
The current 'direct' reasoning strategy causes ENTITY_006 to fail on complex constraint-satisfaction tasks (like the planning failures seen in dev-suite [1]) because it attempts to solve the problem in a single pass. Switching to 'think_then_answer' will allow the agent to internalize the constraints and simulate the schedule before committing to the final answer, improving planning accuracy without the heavy token overhead of a full separate planner call.
